Mental Illness
- One in four adults—approximately 57.7 million Americans— experience a mental health disorder in a given year. One in 17 lives with a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia, major depression or bipolar disorder and 1in about 10 children live with a serious mental or emotional disorder.
- Anxiety disorders, including panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), generalized anxiety disorder and phobias, affect about 18.7 percent of adults, an estimated 40 million individuals. Anxiety disorders frequently co-occur with depression or addiction disorders.
- Suicide is the eleventh-leading cause of death in the Unites States and the third-leading cause of death for people ages 10-24 years of age. More than 90 percent of those who die by suicide have a diagnosable, and treatable, mental disorder.

Developmental Disabilities
- Of people 6 years and older, 11.0 million people (4.1 percent ) needed personal assistance with one or more activities of daily living
- Mental health issues are more likely to occur in people with developmental disabilities than in the general population. Social and developmental restrictions placed on people with developmental disabilities are major factors causing this.

Youth Enrichment
- More than 15 million school-age children (26 percent) are on their own after school. Among them are more than 1 million are in grades K to 5.
- The parents of more than 28 million school-age children work outside the home.
- Only 8.4 million K-12 children (15 percent) participate in afterschool programs. An additional 18.5 million would participate if a quality program were available in their community.
